50 years ago a Biology teacher of mine would walk around the room when he quizzed us, and we would ALL have to be listening because he would bark a question, pause, and only then name the person to answer - EVERYONE had to be ready with an answer, so EVERYONE listened.
Great post! I'm a big fan of incorporating checks for understanding. Inspired by your content, I introduced whiteboards this year.
While the concept of checks for listening makes perfect sense, I feel it might be awkward for my high school class to simply echo back what I said. If my teacher asked me to do it, I would feel a bit humiliated that my zone of proximal development is just repeating what I hear.
