Hello!
I hope you had a well-earned rest over Easter. Here at Eedi Towers, we have been busy writing multiple-choice diagnostic maths questions for primary school students to supplement the 60k+ questions we have for secondary school students.
Multiple-choice diagnostic questions like these help identify the specific nature of student misunderstandings and provide a catalyst for rich in-class discussions. To make these questions more suitable for younger students, we have reduced the literacy demands and, based on research into the optimal number of options for multiple-choice questions, the number of answers
We have initially decided to create questions for the Summer Term of Years 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, based on the White Rose Maths schemes of work, and to write three 5-question quizzes per small step.
Why three quizzes, I hear you ask?
To give you some flexibility in how you use them. You could:
Set Quiz A before the lesson to assess students' prior knowledge of the topic. Then, set Quiz B as homework after the lesson to assess the progress your students have made. Then set Quiz C for homework a few weeks later as a retrieval quiz.
Set Quiz A as homework after the lesson. Analyse the results. Address any questions students struggle with in class, then recheck for understanding using the relevant questions from Quiz B. Then set Quiz C for homework a few weeks later as a retrieval quiz.
Use Quiz A in class as an Exit Ticket or hinge-point. Address any questions students struggle with in class, then recheck for understanding using the relevant questions from Quiz B. Set Quiz C for homework a few weeks later as a retrieval quiz.
Build your own mixed-topic homework, retrieval or low-stakes quizzes by selecting questions from various quizzes.
Here are some strategies for using diagnostic questions in class, a model for responding to your checks for understanding, and some ideas for addressing issues via whole-class feedback.
If you teach in a secondary school, fear not! We also have the summer term small steps mapped for Years 7, 8, and 9. However, there are only two quizzes (A and B) for eac. We will also soon be delving into Reception and Year 1.
For the time being, we are sharing these quizzes on this spreadsheet.
The questions are only available on our diagnostic questions website (as opposed to Eedi). However, you can set up your students in exactly the same way.
We will do our best to stay ahead of the scheme of work and continually update this spreadsheet with new quizzes, so please check back regularly.
The questions are 100% free to use, and I would be grateful if you could help spread the word so that as many teachers and students as possible can benefit.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I hope you and your students find these questions helpful.
How will you use these questions?
