3-Read Friday #98
Small steps, humour, and misused phrases
Before we begin, you may want to check out my brand-new 16-part book series, The Tips for Teachers guide to… here. Book 16 on Observing lessons and Coaching is now available.
Here are three blog posts that I found interesting this week.
1. Small Steps are not Atomisation by Kris Boulton
An important post by Kris that confronts a common misconception about his approach to Atomisation: Atomisation is not breaking mathematics into small procedural steps, but decomposing cognitive routines into conceptual atoms that reveal deep mathematical structures and relationships. I’ll get Kris back on my podcast soon to discuss more!
2. Not All Jokes Are Created Equal: Teacher Humor That Helps (and Hurst) by Andrew Watson
I love Andrew’s deep dives into research papers. Here, he examines a study that finds on-topic humour modestly improves students' perceptions of teachers and lessons, while aggressive humour is harmful!
3. 26 Terms Modern Education Can’t Stop Misusing by Michael Rose
This one made me smile and cringe in equal measures. Enjoy!
Have a great weekend!
Craig
