3-Read Friday #85
Attendance, noise, and school improvement
Before we begin, you may want to check out my brand-new 16-part book series, The Tips for Teachers guide to… here.
Here are three blog posts that I found interesting this week.
1. The Call Collection: PPP in Action by Lynsey White
Pastoral roles in schools have long been ones I have both admired and avoided at every cost. I couldn’t cope with the emotional strain. In this brilliant post, Lynsey shares different conversations between pastoral staff and parents to try to get their students into school.
2. Is a Noisy Classroom a Thinking Classroom? by Carl Hendrick
Carl is banging out some amazing blog posts at the moment. In this one, he highlights a new study examining the impact of classroom noise on learning. The researchers found that when we are trying to retrieve certain concepts from memory to generate new ideas, the most significant interference comes not from meaningless sounds (traffic, humming, background tones etc), but surprisingly from meaningful speech.
3. School Improvement Starts Here: Behaviour, Attention, Participation, and Memory by Adam Boxer
Having followed me into the world of podcasts, he has now joined me on Substack. Get an original idea, Mr Boxer! Annoyingly, Adam is on his usual top form with a blistering post about how to improve schools.
Have a great weekend.
Craig
