3-Read Friday #74
Retrieval and storage strength, area model, and I/We/You
Give your students a chance to stay sharp this summer with our maths Summer Club from July 21st to August 29th!
By completing the Question of the Day (QOTD) each day in their free Eedi account, students can earn weekly prizes and build confidence for the new school year. Plus, 3 lucky winners will be chosen every week!
It’s a fun, easy way to keep learning going while rewarding effort!

Here are three blog posts that I found interesting this week.
1. Retrieval Strength and Storage Strength by Dylan Kane
Big claim alert, but this is the best visualisation of the distinction between the retrieval and storage strengths of memories—and why this matters—that I have ever seen. It could be shared with students and colleagues alike.
2. Building Bridges with the Area Model: From Multiplication to Algebra by Jon Fant
Recently, I argued that maths teachers should choose methods that can be built upon as concepts become more complex. Here, Jon provides a wonderful deep dive into how one particular method—the area model—can take students from multiplication to polynomial division.
3. I/We/You: Use with caution by Rachel Ball and Alex Fairlamb
A detailed post, using examples from several different subjects, that argues that whilst I/We/You is a powerful way to plan and execute a learning cycle, as a rigid lesson structure, it is painfully flawed
